P. 10
Background Information
- Global Standards Symposia (GSS) are high-level standardization policy debates that explore the
evolving dynamics of information and communication technologies (ICTs) and associated
implications for technical standardization. GSS are held at the outset of ITU's quadrennial World
Telecommunication Standardization Assembly (WTSA). Previous symposia were held in
Johannesburg in 2008, Dubai in 2012, Hammamet in 2016, Geneva in 2022 and most recently in
New Delhi in 2024.
- The participants of GSS-24 actively engaged in discussions, sharing insights on key topics and
underscoring which should be prioritized for the ITU's future standardization work planned for
2025–2028, thereby setting the stage for a forward-looking and impactful programme.

our world Ceremony
- GSS-24 delved into crucial topics such as AI governance, explored the synergy between open
source and standards, and examined the transformative impact of technologies such as AI and
metaverse on our global landscape. Additionally, the programme featured two dedicated
ceremonial events: one showcasing mayors from cities that have successfully implemented the
U4SSC KPIs; and the other announcing the distinguished winners of the Blockchain Secure
Authentication (BSA) Application Challenge.
- Notably, the programme also boasted a one-of-a-kind High-Level Segment. This sophisticated
high-level segment brought together ministers and CEOs in a setting that is nothing short of
innovative. This session was a ground-breaking segment where industry and ministerial leaders
synergized their efforts to craft the future of innovation, driving change on a global scale.
