ITU's 160 anniversary

Committed to connecting the world

Internet Waste Dialogue

 FINAL REPORT (in pdf)

The International Telecommunication Union and the WEEE Forum jointly organized an online "Internet Waste Dialogue", in conjunction to the International E-waste Day, which took place on Monday, 19 October 2020, 15:00 – 16:30 (CEST).

The objective of the webinar was to discuss the opportunities and challenges of end-of-life management of infrastructure equipment that enables connectivity. The webinar brought together various manufacturing and recycling companies as well as service providers to elaborate on waste management of data centres, 5G and IoT.

The full impact and regulation of materials and components critical to the digital economy is difficult to assess as the infrastructure and end-of-life management are less visible. This is true especially to individual consumers that use personal ICT devices supported by data centres and telecommunication networks. Raising awareness and exchanging knowledge of this complex waste stream will provoke thought and support the transition to a sustainable society and circular economy.

This webinar targeted stakeholders involved in the management of business-to-business (B2B) infrastructure WEEE, especially from industry (including ITU and WEEE Forum members), international organisations and academic networks, etc.

The Internet Waste thought paper is available for download in pdf.
