International E-Waste Day was developed in 2018 by the WEEE Forum to raise the public profile of WEEE recycling and encourage consumers to recycle their WEEE with the resulting increase in WEEE recycling rates on the day itself and into the future.
In 2019 and 2020, ITU collaborated with the WEEE Forum to mark International E-Waste Day to spread the word on the importance of recycling and properly disposing of WEEE. Strong partnerships are key to achieving this future.
For the 2020 edition, the WEEE Forum and ITU partnered in the preparation of a thought paper on 'Internet Waste' as public knowledge is limited about waste derived from connectivity infrastructure.
ITU will continue to collaborate with the WEEE Forum in 2021 where International E-waste Day will be held on the 14th October.
