As mobile
telecommunications has evolved through the generations to 4G, a number
of questions arise.
Is
4G real? YES.
There are, as of late 2010, more than 150 trials and deployments
committed or firmly planned, with at least 2 networks in service. See
LTE and the Road to 4G (2010-2015) (info.)

Is
it better to go to 3G or to wait for 4G?
It depends. Spectrum
availability, forecasts for data usage, and taking a long term view will
influence the decision.
What
are the drivers to 4G?
Data applications.
Spectral efficiency. Performance. Cost per unit data.
What
is the migration path?
LTE is a natural progression for 3G GSM networks. Backward compatibility
to 2G, 3G and HSPA should enable easy upgrades as LTE can be integrated
with existing infrastructure and protocols. Some operators (e.g.,
Verizon, KDDI) will transition from cdma2000.
