Summary: Panoramic video can provide immersive experience through devices such as Head Mounted Displays (HMDs), which has attracted significant interest in recent years. Panoramic videos can be used in scenarios like virtual tours, immersive entertainment (such as movies or VR experiences), live sports broadcasting, real estate walkthroughs, education, training, manufacture industry, science and exploration. The panoramic video industry has faced several challenges due to the absence of an objective assessment method. Without standardized and objective method to evaluate the quality of panoramic videos, it has been difficult for creators, content distributors, and viewers to assess the true value and impact of these immersive experiences. There are some subjective assessment methods for the panoramic videos have been developed. It is done by human viewers who watch the video and rate its quality according to their personal experience, preferences, and the impact of various factors on their viewing experience. By comparing with the objective assessment method, the subjective assessment will be more time consuming, more expensive by conducting an assessment. The subjective assessment is highly sensitive to viewer’s experience and personal preferences. Due to these limitations of the subjective assessment method, it prevents the common user to perform such a test with an easy way. Establishing an objective quality assessment method for panoramic video would streamline production, distribution, and consumption of immersive video content. It would improve content quality, enable optimization across devices, and ultimately lead to a more consistent and reliable experience for consumers. Such assessment method would also foster industry growth, innovation, and collaboration, making panoramic video content more accessible and sustainable in the long run. Because panoramic video requires high resolution, such as 4K, 8K, or higher, to meet Quality of Experience (QoE) standards, it is often heavily compressed during encoding/decoding for transmission and storage purpose. However, low-resolution or heavily compressed panoramic video can cause discomfort and sometimes even motion sickness. Therefore, it is crucial to study the quality evaluation of panoramic video and promote the improvement of experiences across the industry through the establishment of standards. This is significant for the healthy development of the panoramic video industry.
