Forum on "Turning the E-waste Challenge into an Opportunity"
Nassau, The Bahamas, 15 December 2015
Introduction
E-waste is one of the world’s fastest-growing waste streams, with an estimated 42-million metric tons generated in 2014. Developing countries are known to bear the largest e-waste burden. Often ill-equipped to treat e-waste efficiently, these countries have first-hand experience of the adverse effects of e-waste on the environment and on the health of citizens.
This forum will provide an overview of general principles for e-waste management, including relevant processes and technologies and an overview of policies, strategies and regulatory frameworks that have been successful in promoting the environmentally sustainable management of e-waste worldwide.
This forum is jointly organized by Basel Convention Regional Centers for South America and the Caribbean, ECLAC, ITU, UNESCO, UNIDO and UNU.
