SESSION 1: Overview of public key cryptography and public key infrastructure
Recommendation ITU-T X.509 is a common standard developed jointly by ISO/IEC JTC 1 and ITU since the early 1980s. It defines frameworks for public-key infrastructure (PKI) and privilege management infrastructure (PMI) which are used as the foundation for secure transactions in business-to-business (B2B), business-to-customer (B2C) and government-to-citizen (G2C) environments. This session introduces public key cryptography and public key infrastructure, identifies the current status of public key cryptographic algorithms and how digital public key certificates are used to provide security services i.e. confidentiality, integrity, non-repudiation, etc.

SESSION 2: Impact and use cases of ITU-T X.509
The great success of our digital society in the past 30+ years is founded on the security and trust established by ITU-T X.509. As the key enabler of trusted services and products, ITU-T X.509 certificates are applied everywhere and are essential to every connected process. This session will explore some use cases of ITU-T X.509 in domains such as internet security, 5G, vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications and smart grid and demonstrate how trust is built for the operation of X.509.

SESSION 3: Panel discussion – future directions for evolvement of ITU-T X.509
Bearing in mind the history and intent of X.509 and considering its evolution to where we are today, this session will focus on future directions for X.509 including trust governance, decentralized PKI and decentralized identity based on distributed ledger technologies. It will also identify how X.509 is impacted by quantum-safe cryptography and how ITU-T Study Group 17 collaborates with the standardization community in this regard.
