The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) organized the first
ITU-T X.509 Day that took place virtually on 9 May 2022 from 13h00 to 17h40 Geneva time.
ITU-T X.509 is the common global language for public key infrastructure (PKI) and privilege management infrastructure (PMI) which are used as the foundation for secure transactions in business-to-business (B2B), business-to-customer (B2C) and government-to-citizen (G2C) environments. The basic data structures defined in ITU-T X.509 for certificates and certificate revocation list (CRLs) enable application-specific extensions and support fundamental interoperability requirements in a wide variety of use cases across industry, business, and consumer sectors including in agriculture, education, energy, finance, entertainment, health, manufacturing, transport, and utilities.
After more than 33 years of successful implementations, ITU would like to celebrate on this day the achievements of ITU-T X.509 to:
- provide a brief presentation on the historical material of ITU-T X.509 standard development,
- promote applications of ITU-T X.509,
- review all aspects related to public key cryptography and public key infrastructure,
- review the implementation of ITU-T X.509 by examining past use cases as well as ICT protocols and standards using ITU-T X.509,
- identify potential directions for future developments of ITU-T X.509 standardization and discuss how relevant SDOs could enhance collaboration on future work on ITU-T X.509.
Participation was free of charge and open to all interested stakeholders including ITU Member States, Sector Members, Associates and Academic Institutions and to any individual from a country that is a member of ITU and who wishes to contribute to the work.
