Following the success of “
The Future of Cable TV – see
programme – ", which was held in Geneva on 25-26 January 2018, the International Telecommunication Union is organized a
Workshop on “The Future of TV for the Americas", which took place on 26 November 2018 in Bogotá, Colombia at the kind invitation of the
Comisión de Regulación de Comunicaciones of Colombia.
This event, which was jointly organized by the ITU Standardization Sector (ITU-T) and the ITU Development Sector (ITU-D), focused on the diverse emerging broadband and broadcast technologies, including cable TV, with the aim to assist countries of the Americas region to assess challenges, dynamics and opportunities. The event acted as a platform to share best practices and case studies on related roll-outs as well as provided an opportunity to discuss on the future of TV-related regional and international standardization. Keeping in mind that the future should promote equal opportunities, avoid waste and optimize the use of resources, the event aimed at enhancing the local TV services to their full potential, to enable a future ecosystem which ideally provides advanced services, e.g. virtual and augmented reality, taking advantage of the internet of things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI) as well as integrated 5G networks. Finally this event aimed to support a future where the fast flow of information is provided at affordable costs in order to ensure to everyone accessibility and a more inclusive life.
Objectives:

Present best practices from a business perspectives from other regions: share the results and experiences from other regions (e.g. Europe and Asia) with local industry, inviting experts to present the state of the TV industry in other parts of the world including policy and regulatory aspects.

Inform the local experts on latest technologies and ITU standards: expose the current standardization work from different ITU Study Groups to the local operators, highlighting the potentials of fiber optics deployment and interplay with HFC and FTTH networks. The aim is to enable and complement the current broadband, broadcast and cable TV offering, with new advanced services in the region.

Present regional case studies and regulatory approaches: enable local regulators to showcase their regulatory frameworks, identifying success stories as well as challenges, aiming at identifying regulatory gaps in the region.

Foster an enabling environment for sustainable growth and deployment of broadband, broadcast and cable TV services in the region: evaluate the possibility to generate a set of regional Recommendations, which would take into account the reality of the TV sector in Americas and in other regions of the world and would support a more homogeneous regional regulatory framework.
- Disseminate knowledge and support the training of students and academics: promote the ITU work in this field among academics with the aim to include related studies in their curricula, in order to prepare professionals in the ICT field with an open minded approach and perception of the broadband, broadcast and cable TV ecosystems under the umbrella of the ITU.
