ITU-D Study Groups organised this public webinar focusing on the Economic implications of COVID-19 on national telecommunications/ICT infrastructure.
As part of the work of
ITU-D Study Group 1 Question 4/1, on Economic policies and methods of determining the costs of services related to national telecommunication/ICT networks, this webinar focused on experts discussion about the economic impact of COVID-19 situation on telecommunications/ICT providers. The discussion aimed to share the analysis from the owners of telecommunication/ICT infrastructure about the potential economic impact associated to COVID-19. We shall strive for answer to:
- Are social confinement measures (e.g. teleworking, e-learning, entertaining) increasing companies’ incomes? Will these increases be sustained in the future?
- Is this situation resulting in an increase of operational costs (e.g. due to increase of traffic)?
- Are required upgrading investments be above expected figures?
- Will future investment plans be diminished? Is roll-out of new networks going to be delayed?
- Are companies implementing any measures to mitigate these impacts?
An open discussion with all participants explored the related challenges, opportunities and lessons learned. The insights and findings gathered through this web dialogue will be considered for the final output report of Question 4/1. This discussion complemented from the operational point of view the discussions about the overall economic situation of the sector addressed in the ITU's economic experts roundtable “COVID-19 and the Digital Economy".
Based on discussions held during the Webinar, an ITU News article on "How COVID-19 impacts telecom operators’ economics " was issued on 1 October 2020.
