The ITU World Information Society Award has been created to honour
individuals or institutions that have made a significant personal contribution
to promoting, building, or strengthening a people-centered, development-oriented
and knowledge-based information Society. Personal achievement may take the form
of social accomplishment, mobilization of public opinion, or a key technical
innovation.
This ITU Award will be presented annually, on 17 May, to mark World Information Society Day.
This year, the ITU World Information Society Award 2006 is presented
to two distinguished and eminent personalities who have furthered the cause
of building a more inclusive and equitable Information Society and helped close
the digital divide: President Abdoulaye Wade of Senegal and
Professor Muhammad Yunus, Managing Director of Grameen Bank, Bangladesh.
Programme
The Award Ceremony took place on Wednesday 17 May 2006 from 11:00 to 12:30
in the Geneva International Conference Centre (CICG).
In addition to the Ceremony, a
10-day programme of events is
organized in conjunction with the World Information Society Day.
