Summary:
|
During these years, there was a big discussion on GHG emission level from industry. The need to respect Paris agreement, the activities linked to UN SDGs is now accepted as an important goal and the possible setting of target from administration for countries and industries to reduce the amount of CO2 that they emit. As consequence, it is clear and accepted that telecom operator, as other industry, need to set target on their emission reduction to arrive at a net zero situation as reported in Recommendation ITU-T L.1470.
In a moment in which the data traffic will increase this Recommendation defines a metric useful to evaluate network emission and give an indication on how a network can reduce its emission due to the energy usage.
This Recommendation defines a metric called Network Carbon data/energy intensity (NCIe) covering the GHG emission due to energy consumption. How to apply the Recommendation: which part of network it is covered and finally how to calculate the metric and continuously in network and traffic evolution.
The Carbon Factor used in this Recommendation need be derived by relevant ITU-T document or IEA reporting.
