La Recommandation UIT T Y.4471 définit une architecture fonctionnelle de référence pour l'assistance à la conduite fondée sur le réseau pour les véhicules autonomes. Elle précise ce qu'on entend par assistance à la conduite fondée sur le réseau, spécifie les principales entités fonctionnelles et définit les points de référence entre les entités. En outre, les Appendices I et II présentent respectivement les cas d'utilisation et les procédures opérationnelles.
Pour améliorer la conduite des véhicules autonomes, la coordination entre les véhicules et les infrastructures doit être améliorée grâce à des technologies de réseau afin de répondre aux exigences croissantes en matière de services et d'applications de transport. L'assistance à la conduite fondée sur le réseau permet d'améliorer la sécurité et l'efficacité de la conduite automatisée grâce à des capacités de perception et de prise de décision en coopération.
