ZTE is leveraging digital technologies to help protect biodiversity alongside advancing meaningful connectivity and digital transformation globally.

By Summer Chen, Vice President, ZTE

As a leading provider of integrated information and communication technology solutions, ZTE Corporation is concerned about environmental sustainability and biodiversity both at home and abroad.

The use of advanced technologies has opened up new possibilities for environmental protection, ecological monitoring, scientific expeditions, and innovative management of protected areas.

Protecting wildlife in the Kekexili Nature Reserve

In collaboration with Sanjiangyuan National Park, China Mobile’s Qinghai Branch, and China Tower, we have braved the elements, as well as the technical challenges, to deliver a comprehensive telecommunication solution for wildlife protection in the Kekexili Nature Reserve.

Real-time monitoring of Tibetan antelope births

Featuring high-capacity microwave technology, base stations, and readying long-distance Internet coverage, the initiative established the first 5G base station at the Zhuonai Lake protection station. The station can now conduct real-time monitoring of Tibetan antelope births and enhances communication for wildlife guardians in challenging environments.

5G panda protection

In Sichuan, another Chinese province, we rolled out Panda’s Coming, the world’s first panda protection application based on 5G messaging, to assist in habitat conservation and the daily work of rangers.

Protecting biodiversity globally

ZTE is actively engaging in biodiversity protection initiatives worldwide.

In Austria, for example, we partnered with Drei Austria and IoT40 on the 5G Bee-o-Meter for Biotech project to improve conditions for the survival of bees.

An ITU Partner2Connect champion

ZTE is dedicated to promoting digital transformation and meaningful connectivity in the world’s least-developed countries (LDCs), landlocked developing countries (LLDCs), and small island developing states (SIDS), with the aim of bridging the global digital divide.

We are one of the first Partner2Connect (P2C) champions, recognizing our partnership with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in mobilizing commitments to connect the world’s hardest-to-reach communities.

Rural network deployment in Liberia

ZTE has recently teamed with Orange Liberia for the local mobile company’s first rural network infrastructure project.

We have established 128 communication sites across rural Liberia, providing low-cost, easy-to-deploy and environmentally friendly (solar-powered) network services to locals. The project is effectively addressing connectivity issues in remote areas where conventional network solutions failed.

Over 580,000 subscribers will benefit from enhanced digital, financial, and energy services − laying a solid foundation for the digital future of Liberia and of Africa as a whole.

Committed to enabling connectivity and trust

As a member of the United Nations Global Compact – affirming our commitment to implement universal sustainability principles – and the Global Electronics Sustainability Initiative (GeSI), we aim to enable connectivity and trust everywhere.

The company strives to bridge the global digital divide by upholding the principle of “Tech for All”.

By maintaining this vision and driving digital innovations, we are resolved to contribute new momentum towards achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
