Mr Lalith Weeratunga is the Secretary to the President of Sri Lanka since November 2005. He entered the Sri Lanka Administrative Service (SLAS) in January 1977 and has held a number of senior positions in the Public Service as Secretary to the Prime Minister, Additional Secretary to the Ministry of Education & Higher Education, Director General of the Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission and Vice Chairman of the National Apprenticeship Board. He had also been Chief Technical Advisor/Vocational Training Specialist in the Regional Office of the International Labour Organization (ILO) for Asia & Pacific, Thailand and had worked as a Consultant of the United Nations Development Programme for the Government of Maldives. Throughout his career, he has served in many Task Forces, Committees, and Governing Councils of Universities, and Boards of Directors of Public Corporations and Statutory Boards.
Mr Weeratunga currently holds positions as the Chairman of the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka and Chairman of the Petroleum Resources Development Committee. Additionally, he chairs the Committee overseeing the Implementation of the National Plan of Action for the Implementation of LLRC Recommendations, the Presidential Task Force for a Trilingual Sri Lanka, the Presidential Task Force for National Productivity and the National Administrative Reforms Council, the Steering Committee on Knowledge Hub Initiative, and National Steering Committee on Nutrition.
Mr Weeratunga received his primary education from Rahula College, Matara before moving to Royal College, Colombo for his secondary education. He holds a Masters Degree in Business Administration from the University of Colombo and a Bachelors Degree in Natural Sciences from the same university. Later, he attended Pennsylvania State University for postgraduate studies. He is a Hubert H. Humphrey Fellow of the Pennsylvania State University, USA.
