​Stefan Kuhn joined ICLEI in 1996. As Deputy Regional Director for Europe and member of the European Secretariat's Board of Directors, he is responsible for ICLEI's involvement in urban governance and social innovation issues in Europe.
An Urban Geographer with further studies in economy, social and educational science, he has been developing, leading and supervising international projects and strategies around themes such as sustainable urban development planning, Local Agenda 21, integrated management and governance systems, stakeholder involvement, knowledge brokerage, transition management, etc.
In Europe, Stefan Kuhn is involved in key urban processes such as the European Reference Framework for Sustainable Cities and the European Sustainable Cities Platform; he is a jury member of the European Green Capital Award, a member of the European Commission's Advisory Group 5 to Horizon 2020, and an assessment team member to the German Sustainability Award.
Internationally, Stefan Kuhn has led and presented the Global Review 'Local Sustainability 2012' for the UN Rio+20 Conference, and is further involved in the UN process of defining Post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He is an experienced trainer and consultant for local, sub-national and national governments, and has authored and published numerous articles and handbooks on urban governance for sustainability and related issues.
