20 September 2023
Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire
The
International Telecommunication Union (ITU) organised an ITU-T Study Group 2 Regional Workshop for Africa on
“IoT/M2M numbering" on the afternoon of 20 September 2023, in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, at the kind invitation of
Autorité de Régulation des Télécommunications/ TIC de Côte d'Ivoire (ARTCI).
The workshop was preceded by an
ITU-T SG13RG-AFR workshop from 19 to 20 September 2023 and was followed by meetings of
ITU-T SG13RG-AFR and
ITU-T SG2RG-AFR from 21 to 22 September 2023, all at the same venue. Remote participation was provided for the workshop.
Objectives
The objective of this workshop was to foster dialogue and collaboration among participants, including policymakers, regulators, industry experts, and academia, to explore the key aspects and potential solutions related to IoT/M2M numbering in Africa. By sharing experiences, best practices, and lessons learned, we aimed to achieve the following objectives:
-
Understanding the Current Landscape: Gain insights into the existing IoT/M2M numbering practices and frameworks in different countries across Africa. Assess the challenges and opportunities associated with numbering allocation, management, and utilization.
-
Capacity Building: Promote knowledge sharing and capacity building initiatives to enhance technical expertise and skills in IoT/M2M numbering. Discuss training programs and educational resources to empower the workforce and support the adoption of best practices.
-
Technological Advancements: Examine the evolving technological landscape in IoT/M2M, including emerging numbering schemes, addressing architectures, and protocols. Explore the potential impact of new technologies, such as 5G, on IoT/M2M numbering.
-
Regulatory Framework: Discuss the regulatory and policy considerations for IoT/M2M numbering, including the allocation of resources, interoperability, and security. Explore how regulatory frameworks can facilitate innovation and investment in IoT/M2M technologies while ensuring efficient resource utilization.
-
Industry Perspectives: Engage with industry stakeholders, including network operators, service providers, device manufacturers, and IoT solution providers, to understand their perspectives, challenges, and requirements concerning IoT/M2M numbering.
Target audience
Participation in the workshop was open to ITU Member States, Sector Members, Associates and Academic Institutions and to any individual from a country that is a member of ITU who wishes to contribute to the work.
