Background information

After the concept of Internet of Things (IoT) has been introduced more than 20 years ago, it is gradually gaining momentum to become a reality and mainstream in multiple businesses today. Not only businesses, but also consumers can benefit from a wide range of connected things in a variety of related applications and services. Many different stakeholders, including governments, industries, universities, NGOs, and tech start-ups, are involved in bringing the most of the IoT.
However and to date, IoT development is mainly occurring in developed countries. The IoT is relevant not only for industrialized economies, but also and even more relevant for developing countries. Namely, it can significantly improve many aspects of human wellbeing that may be taken for granted in developed countries, but not necessarily the case in developing countries, such as access to healthcare, food and clean water. It is not only important for economic growth, but can also make a significant contribution to socially and ecologically sustainable development. At the same time, the introduction of IoT is not without challenges and requires careful preparation to address them, including through adapted regulations, infrastructure and skills.
