Almaty, 16 September 2022 - The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) together with the Ministry of Digital Development, Innovation and Aerospace Industry of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Centre for Analysis and Investigation of Cyber Attacks (TSARKA) conducted a cyber security exercise. The 2022 Cyber Security Exercise focused on the role of national Computer Incident Response Teams (CIRTs) and Computer Security Incident Response Teams (CSIRTs), building resilience in the cyber environment, and protecting critical information infrastructure.
More than 70 participants from 15 countries attended the event, and 12 teams from 10 countries participated in the exercise.
The first day was opened by the Centre for Analysis and Investigation of Cyber Attacks with a panel discussion on "Building National Cyber Resilience and Protecting Critical Information Infrastructure". It was followed by presentations from Kaspersky, Solar - Rostelecom, Positive Technologies and other representative offices on the following topics: improving cooperation between national CIRTs and law enforcement agencies, confidence building measures through cyber mediation, top 10 mistakes in incident response, cyber training ground as a valuable tool in education and training.
The second and third day included practical exercises for teams from the CIS and Arab regions, representing simulated scenarios to assess cyber security emergency preparedness and their incident response capabilities to mitigate and counter cyber attacks. The exercise helped foster closer international cooperation between participating countries, improved their communication and also provided an opportunity to share experiences in mitigation.
“Since 2017 ITU has been working to foster cooperation on cybersecurity in the CIS region via policy and strategy advice, technical training, and regional and cross-regional CyberDrills. We are proud to partner with policymakers and national CERTs, private sector superstar companies, and our international development peers World Bank and OSCE” – Farid Nakhli, Programme Coordinator, ITU Regional Office for the CIS.
The inter-regional exercise provided a platform for capacity development to improve existing communication mechanisms and strengthen innovative approaches to national CIRT/CSIRT cooperation.
