EPR IMPLEMENTATION ROADMAP ON THE MANAGEMENT OF WASTE ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT IN ZAMBIA

Background
From 2023, International Telecommunication Union (ITU) with support from the Communications, Space and Technology Commission (CST), Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will provide technical assistance to the Government of Zambia with the development of their WEEE regulation. Globally, there are many different initiatives moving towards the environmentally sound management of WEEE. Definitions are mostly not harmonised nor are collection targets, whilst there is a potential for divergence, even among neighbouring countries. It is therefore an opportune time for an initiative which aims to drive harmonisation of WEEE management to create an enabling environment for a circular economy. As part of the project, ITU and CST will provide technical support to three countries: Panama, Rwanda and Zambia. This project will build on previous initiatives in the area of strategy, policy, and regulatory development for WEEE management and its implementation.

Objectives:
The event marks the first step in setting up a regulatory system for e-waste in Zambia.
The event aims to:
    1. Introduce participants to basics and key elements of e-waste and circular economy.
    2. Explore the existing regulatory-institutional landscape of e-waste management.
    3. Align on key definitions, terms and the regulation of e-waste management.
    4. Agree on a roadmap for the collective implementation of an EPR system for e-waste.
    5. Generate momentum around the e-waste issue, such as through media reporting.
