In 2016, FAO and ITU launched a publication series titled e-Agriculture in Action with the intention to highlight the use of ICT for agriculture in selected areas of relevance to the ecosystem and to promote successful, scalable, sustainable and replicable ‘ICT for agriculture’ (ICT4Ag) solutions.
The agricultural sector is of critical importance for the attainment of universal food security, and is also a major determinant of health, well-being, and development. Advancements in technology offer a unique opportunity to improve agricultural practices, to make farming more productive and sustainable, while improving the quality of food and preserving the environment.
To help both public and private sector stakeholders learn about and adopt promising ICT4Ag solutions, the e-Agriculture in Action series looks at real life cases of innovative use of digital technologies in crop and livestock farming, agriculture supply chain management, and market regulation. Since its launch, the series has looked at some of the most intriguing emerging technologies, including drones, blockchain, big data, and artificial intelligence.
Each of the reports provides a selection of case studies that talk about stories of different projects, uncovering practically-applicable information about key success factors, challenges, lessons learnt, impact achieved, and new opportunities uncovered. These insights present an important and can be used by implementors and developers in their efforts to promote digital transformation in agriculture.
