Summary:
|
Network energy saving has never been so important. While the overall energy efficiency of 5G is better than any of the previous generations, it might not be the case at the initial stage when the 5G terminal penetration rate is not very high, then the energy efficiency issue of 5G can be a problem for lowering network operation cost. Nevertheless, more new technologies and enhanced technologies need to happen in 5G era such as equipment deep sleep, L/NR carrier cooperative shutdown, enhanced channel shutdown and symbol aggregation shutdown. The 5G NR standard allows more components to switch off or go to sleep when the base station is in idle mode and requires far fewer transmissions of always-on signaling transmissions.
This recommendation identifies the software energy-saving features of 5G network, formulate and verify the software energy-saving solutions, and propose the corresponding test requirements for different software energy-saving features, thereby reducing the energy consumption of the 5G network, lowing network operating expense, and making the 5G network a green and high-efficiency network.
This recommendation will promote the MNOs and manufacturers to carry out energy-saving software development and application, to ensure that MNOs effectively reduce operating expense, and contribute to achieve the goal of net zero carbon emissions in ICT industry.
