Summary: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a 3-D imaging method that visualizes signals obtained from electromagnetic resonance in magnetic fields by exciting hydrogen atoms in the body. MRI is the only imaging method described by WHO that does not use ionizing radiation and therefore does not pose an exposure risk to the patient, which makes MRI a safe, powerful, non-invasive technique for visualizing the internal structure and function of the human body with a rich range of biological contrasts, especially for soft tissues. However, due to the high costs of MRI scanners and the lack of educational facilities involved in imparting technical training has resulted in the global geographical imbalance in accessibility to MRI. For example, India, the second most populous country, has a scanner density of less than 1 pmp while eleven countries in Africa (with populations ranging from 0.735 million to 67.51 million) have no scanners. In order to ameliorate this situation, it is desirable to have low-cost moveable MRI systems that can be operated with minimal set of knowledge and training. In order to deploy such moveable low-field MRI systems for medical purposes, it is necessary to set up requirements and guidelines for such systems as well as for their operation. Currently there is no standard for these systems, and this (draft) Recommendation is expected to fill this gap.
