Why?
At the World Telecommunication Development Conference (Istanbul, 2002),
participants underlined the need for greater regional coordination to
facilitate a coordinated approach and to engage members in the WTDC process
early on (see Resolution 31 (Istanbul,
2002)). In response
to this need, a series of preparatory meetings were organized during 2005. The objective
was to adopt appropriate
development strategies at regional and subregional level, based on
initiatives and projects as well as on questions and topics relevant to the
development requirements and priorities of the countries of every region.
The output
of each preparatory meeting was tabled at a
Coordination
Meeting to take place in conjunction with the meeting of the
Telecommunication Development Advisory Group (Geneva, 12-16 December 2005). The role of the Coordination Meeting
was to consolidate the
coordinated proposals to be tabled at WTDC-06 in Doha (Qatar) for the
preparation of the Doha Action Plan. This preparatory process also
facilitated the development of a comprehensive four-year rolling operational
plan for the Telecommunication Development Sector.
