Session 1: Making the most of scarcity

This session will present an overview of challenges in managing water as a particularly scarce resource in the MENA and African contexts.  The session will offer an overview of issues related to water scarcity in both regions touching on the challenges faced by the Nile Basin countries in particular.  This session sets the scene for the workshop by spelling out with clear statistics and figures the size of the problem currently faced.  The session will also touch on the three types of scarcity including:  that of the physical resource, organizational scarcity and scarcity of accountability.

Session 2: Smart Water Management Technologies and Policies in Agriculture and Irrigation (Part I)

This session will tackle ICT tools used in addressing the organizational scarcity of the water sector and will examine how ICTs can enhance the efficient use of water in agriculture and irrigation.

Session 3: Smart Water Management Standards

This session will examine the areas in which work on standardization activities on water management including weather forecasting and climate monitoring, emergency communications, consumer interface for smart grids, GIS standards, semantic sensor web and water mark-up language.

 Session 4:  Smart Water Management Technologies and Policies in Agriculture and Irrigation (Part II)

This session will examine best practices on smart water management policies which have been implemented by certain countries and which could be considered for implementation for countries in the NIle River Basin including: Mapping of water resources and weather forecasting, just in time irrigation and landscaping, asset management for the water distribution network.

Session 5: Smart Cities and Water Management

The objective of the session will discuss the concept of smart cities and provide an overview of the role of ICTs as an enabler for smart water management in a city environment. This session will also examine how countries are implementing smart metering and how smart water metering can help reduce the carbon footprint.  The session will also address the challenges faced by cities in general and potable water, as well as setting up early warning systems probing into how water consumption habits could become “smart”.

This session will examine the use of sensor networks, communication networks and Internet in enabling smart management of water resources in areas such as agriculture, leisure activities, and storm water harvesting.

Session 7: Next steps: Building a Water Resource Efficient Green Economy

This session will discuss next steps on how to build a water resource efficient economy.  Through a panel discussion,rapporteurs and experts will exchange views and offer specific proposals for Smart water management to be considered for implementation by countries in the MENA region and the Nile Basin.
