In Armenia, 91.5% of people in rural areas have access to the Internet, but only 73.3% of individuals in these areas are using it, according to ITU data.

The construction and deployment of telecommunication networks promotes a country’s economic, social and technological development.

To support rural connectivity in Armenia, the ITU Telecommunications Development Bureau (BDT) is implementing a ‘Rural networks pilot project in Armenia’ project to boost connectivity and encourage innovation, sustainable development and opportunities for social participation.

This is achieved through technical design, capacity development, network deployment, and community engagement.

A comprehensive plan was developed in coordination with ITU, the Ministry of High-Tech Industry, and local authorities, focusing on connecting six rural communities in five villages - Zangakatun, Vardashat, Urtsalanj, Lanjar, Lusashoh, Lanjanits and Shagap.

Through the project, 10,610 meters of broadband network using 24-wire optical cable and 3,860 meters using 8-wire optical cable were deployed. These networks connect five villages : Zangakatun, Vardashat, Urtsalanj, Lanjar, Lusashoh, Lanjanits and Shagap.

In June 2024, an assessment was conducted to evaluate community needs and opportunities.

A series of information meetings were held to introduce the benefits of the broadband network to members of the six communities. At the same time, computer literacy training began for 30 participants from the six communities.

The project’s success is thanks to a strong collaboration between local government, international organizations, telecom providers, and non-governmental organizations.
