BWIT celebrates Girls in ICT Day 2015; expand horizons, change attitudes
Bangladesh Women in Technology (BWIT) celebrated Girls in ICT Day in Dhaka, Bangladesh on 23 April 2015. The event was sponsored by IGW Operators Forum
(IOF). It opened with a song on “Girls on ICT Day” by UCEP girl students written and composed by UCEP. An incredible effort for urban working children
studying at UCEP. Mrs. Hosne Ara, Managing Director Bangladesh Hi- Tech Park as Chief Guest, spoke on opportunities for Girls in ICT in Digital
Bangladesh and the initiatives of the government to encourage women and girls. Luna Shamsuddoha, President BWIT, while presenting Girls on ICT Day
talked about “why girls matter” and on the expectation and participation of girls and Women in Technology in their careers and business and in the
proper use of the new media technology.
Bangladesh Women in Technology celebrates the ITU established ‘Girls in ICT Day’ to inspire girls to consider a future in technology. It supports the
global organization of activities every year. And celebrated the Day and theme Expand Horizons Change attitudes.
The day is becoming an event of high impact, was attended by girl students from different Universities, Institutions and Underprivileged Educational
Programme. Prof Suraiya Pervin of Dhaka University, Rezwana Khan Director Star Computers, spoke on the occasion. UCEP official gave a presentation on
e-Learning, use of technology in the curriculum and hands on technical education. It showcased impact on girls in technology education in early years
till grade 8 and in technical education, and in their careers.. http://www.ucepbd.org/ .
Women start-ups and young entrepreneurs working with Access to Information Prime Minister’s Office, SME Foundation also attended the event. Vice
Chancellor Central Women University Dr. Perveen Hasan, Computer Science Faculty of different Universities, Professionals from Grameen phone-Accenture,
Computer Science Professionals and Media were in attendance.
BWIT held an Mobile Apps contest for Girl students on Social awareness element where ICT can be used in Health, Security, Education, Career” for Women
and Girls. There was remarkable response and most interesting concept were presented by girls from different Universities. The goal of the Contest was
to promote women in technology by inspiring girls to see themselves not just as users of technology, but as inventors, designers, builders, and
entrepreneurs in the technology industry. BWIT held an Mobile Apps contest for Girl students on Social awareness element where ICT can be used in
Health, Security, Education, Career” for Women and Girls. There was remarkable response and most interesting concept were presented by girls from
different Universities. The goal of the Contest was to promote women in technology by inspiring girls to see themselves not just as users of
technology, but as inventors, designers, builders, and entrepreneurs in the technology industry. Team Kitkat, students of Bangladesh University of
Engineering and Technology won the Contest for an App social awareness and platform for ease of doing business for women entrepreneurs. Students from
Dhaka University Computer Science Department, UITS, Khulna University and other Institution participate in the Contest.
