Measuring the Information Society of Islamic Republic of Iran
Title acronym
IranMIS
Description *
Iran Information technology organization has defined a long-term and ongoing program for measuring the information society of Iran and evaluating progress with regards to the existing ICT-related goals and policies in the development plans of the country as well as towards WSIS targets, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and other related agendas. As a part of this program, ITO has developed the ICT Core Indicators of Iran, all needed processes, including data collection, data processing, data evaluation and analysis, data dissemination, reporting and interaction with national and international bodies, continuous improvement process and national coordination and collaboration. Also, during these years the needed supporting software and hardware infrastructure has been developed by ITO. Now, all the data and analysis from the existing processes are published in the Portal of Measuring the Information Measuring the Information Society of Iran (mis.ito.gov.ir). Establishing the organization and financial structures is an achievement. In develop progress program, ITO has defined a short-term project to measure e-commerce status for the first time in Iran. By considering all the facts that have been mentioned above, it can be seen that this project is related to “Data, monitoring and accountability” as one of the systematic issues of SDG Goal 17 target. SDG Goal 17 is about establishing partnerships between governments, the private sector and civil society for successful sustainable development. For this, there is a need to review and monitoring frameworks, regulations and incentive structures that enable investments and reinforce sustainable development. National oversight mechanisms such as supreme audit institutions and oversight functions by legislatures should be strengthened. By 2020, the international community should enhance capacity-building support to developing countries to increase significantly the availability of high-quality, timely and reliable data.
