Description *
Grameen Foundation USA is a global nonprofit organization that brings innovative and sustainable solutions to address poverty and hunger. With the support of the Global Resilience Partnership, Grameen formed a consortium of private and public sector partners to implement a program called FarmerLink. FarmerLink aims to address the development problem of coconut SHFs in the Philippines by: 1) improving productivity, 2) increasing access to financial services, 3) improving direct market linkages, and 4) mitigating the impacts of weather, pest and disease through the use of an early warning system (EWS). The ultimate goal of FarmerLink is to increase income and strengthen the resilience of coconut SHFs, while creating viable, sustainable pathways to scale the program and its impacts throughout the Philippines. FarmerLink tackles these goals by bringing together the impact of focused agricultural extension services with the scalability and immediacy of mobile technology. The intervention encourages and supports nine good agricultural practices (GAPs), as identified and promoted by the Philippines Coconut Authority because of their association with higher productivity. FarmerLink users gradually learn about and test out and practice all nine GAPs, thereby leading to improved farm income and resilience. At the same time, FarmerLink partnerships help farmers gain access to vital financial and non-financial services, including investment, capacity building and market linkages.
