Dear All,

Thank you for already expressing interest in participating in the work of EGTI also in 2025; Let me also put here the future work items discussed during the EGTI meeting, to focus the discussion in this forum thread:

Potential topics flagged for future work:
- Development of the ICT Development Index (IDI) (as a joint subgroup with EGH);
- Submarine cables (raised in the forum)
- Network sharing (raised in the forum)
- Environmental/sustainability of ICT sector indicators
- Refinement of QoS / speed indicators
- Satellite-based broadband Internet indicators
- Middle-mile connectivity indicators (data centers, cloud computing, secure Internet servers, IXPs)
- OTT use indicators
- indicators on emerging technologies

You can indicate your intention to join a discussion topic (or a subgroup) in one of the items listed for future work (topics receiving sufficient support will be part of the 2025 Work Programme; subgroups need at least 10 engaged, active contributors while forum discussion topics serve to share experience and best practices). You can of course also indicate other topics of interest, we hope to keep the forum as a virtual space to continue the discussions we just started in Geneva.

Dear Daniel.

Telecommunication Regulatory Agency (Anatel) in Brazil support creation of the subgroups to discuss these topics in 2025:

a) Submarine cables.
b) Network sharing.
c) Environmental/sustainability of ICT sector indicators.
d) Refinement of QoS / speed indicators
e) Satellite-based broadband Internet indicators
f) Middle-mile connectivity indicators (data centers, cloud computing, secure Internet servers, IXPs).
g) OTT use indicators; and
h) Emerging Technologies.

Experts of the Anatel will share their experiences with the colleagues in the subgroups created or in the Forum.

We also will contribute the work of the Joint EGTI-EGH subgroup on IDI development and will share our experiences in ICT Prices.

Best Regards.

Dear Daniel,

all the topics proposed seem really interesting to me, and I would like to participate in these groups to share the Italian experience on these topics.
I would also like to suggest a further topic worthy (IMHO) of depper analysis, namely the measurement of broadband traffic on fixed networks.
I think it could be interesting to analyze, in addition to the _quality_ of the network, also the _quantity_ of data that the network carries: in this sense, the topic is highly related to the other suggested topics.

I imagine it could be nice to share the Italian experience, given that recently in September (resolution 350/24/CONS) we launched an observatory dedicated specifically to traffic, with a particular focus on traffic due to live streaming.

Best regards
Silvio

Dear all,
thanks Daniel for the invitation to put forward issues for discussion. I propose the following two (just for consideration, discussion and explore possibilities):

Given the emergence of 5G networks, the data traffic growth and flows worldwide and the need to lower the cost for deployment the following issues may be of interest to measure, though each presents its own difficulties and there is, as of now, lack of consistent agreed definitions and methods for its measurement.

The relevance of each of the issue may vary from country to country and some measurements may need international coordination efforts. The following evolutions of telecom networks are proposed to be discussed.

1- submarine cables (by traditional telecom operators, Tier 1 and other enterprises)

2- degree of network sharing in mobile and fixed networks:
Joint deployments of new infrastructure, passive and active network sharing agreements among operators, presence of only- wholesale tower companies in mobile communications networks, Joint Ventures among operators, vertical separation of towers and passive infrastructure inside telecom operators.
Note that in the ITU Datahub there is some information on sharing (https://datahub.itu.int/data/?i=100014 ) and that the Regulatory and Market Division pf ITU is already asking issues related to sharing. Maybe a way forward is to coordinate with them and see how to add dimensions to this very important development in networks.

Looking forward to have the chance to discuss these and other proposals in late September,

Iigo

Dear EGTI Members,

You are invited to propose areas of future indicator development for EGTI.

Indicators collected and disseminated by ITU are based on methodologies developed and agreed by EGTI. There are well-established indicators collected across the world measuring mobile or fixed broadband subscriptions, with various breakdowns, measuring traffic, prices, etc.
However, there are aspects of digital development for which KPIs are only monitored in some countries, but in the absence of globally harmonized methodologies, international comparisons cannot be made.
If you have in mind a topic or an indicator that you believe could be a good candidate for developing a harmonized data collection methodology for developing supply-side indicators, please make your proposal here.

#9658; Is there an aspect of digital development for which you believe ITU should develop new indicators?
#9658; Do you feel that some of the existing indicators should be updated or changed given the rapidly evolving nature of the telecom sector?
#9658; Has your regulatory authority / ministry / operator been using new data sources and/or data collection methods that you think ITU and its Members could benefit from?
#9658; Are there data quality or consistency issues that should be addressed by EGTI?

As customary, the FUTURE WORK session of the EGTI meeting will set the agenda for indicator development.
Please post here any ideas or suggestions for EGTIs work for 2025.

As an initial round of suggestions, please find here topics that have been noted in recent EGTI meetings to be possible candidates for future work:
  • Develop indicators to measure middle-mile connectivity (IXPs, data centers, etc. and their environmental footprint);
  • better measurement of satellite-based broadband Internet as a solution to connect the unconnected.
  • measuring subscriptions and traffic for over-the-top services (OTTs) or number-independent Number-Independent Interpersonal Communication Services (NI-ICS)
  • refining the methodology for indicators such as QoS or investments
    etc.

PLEASE ADD YOUR ITEM to the list by responding to this post, or, if you feel more comfortable contacting either the EGTI Chair or the ITU secretariat, please feel free to send an email to indicators@itu.int.

Best regards,
Daniel
