Harmonized 79 GHz frequency band sought for automotive radars
Affordable in-vehicle radars for road safety
and efficient transport systems
Geneva, 5 November 2012 – ITU will
host a workshop in Geneva on 7 November 2012 to demonstrate the progress made
over the past year in developing short-range high-resolution automotive radar
systems in the 79 GHz frequency band that will contribute to increased transport
efficiencies and road safety. The developments have been made within the
automotive industry, working together with international bodies such as ITU and
the European Commission.
The workshop organized by the industry-based ‘79 GHz
Consortium’ in coordination with ITU’s Radiocommunication Bureau will run 10:30
– 13:00 in Room K followed by a live demonstration at 14:00 outside ITU
Montbrillant building.
Agreement is sought on 79 GHz as the worldwide
harmonized frequency band for automotive radars. Based on studies conducted by
the ITU Radiocommunication Sector (ITU-R), the World Radiocommunication
Conference 2015 will consider the allocation of the band 77.5-78 GHz to the
radiolocation service.
What:
|
Workshop on the use of automotive radars for
future Intelligent Transport Systems and live
demonstration of automotive short-range
high-resolution radar operations in the 79 GHz
frequency band.
|
When:
|
Press briefing and demonstration for media of
radar equipped vehicles:
7 November 2012, 09:30 – 10:30
(Workshop: 7 November, 10:30 – 13:00; public
demonstration: 14:00 – 16:30)
|
Where:
|
ITU Montbrillant Building, 2 rue de Varembé,
Geneva
|
Why:
|
The “79 GHz Consortium”, in partnership with ITU’s
Radiocommunication Sector, aims to establish a
harmonized worldwide frequency allocation for
vehicular radars in line with the frequency
range allocated by the European Commission in
2004. This standardization process is in the
framework of the upcoming ITU World
Radiocommunication Conference in 2015 (WRC-15).
