Ask the Expert Session – Smart Submarine Cables: The future of disaster management

Smart submarine cables represent a cutting-edge evolution in underwater telecommunications infrastructure, integrating advanced technologies to enhance performance, efficiency, and resilience. These cables, which form the backbone of global internet connectivity, are equipped with sophisticated sensors and monitoring systems that enable real-time data collection and analysis.

In conjunction with World Tsunami Awareness Day on 5 November, our expert speaker covered the evolution of submarine cable technologies and we had the opportunity to learn more about the challenges and solutions in submarine cable deployment by understanding the complexities of laying and maintaining submarine cables, including environmental considerations and risk mitigation strategies.

Target Audience

Participation is open to the ITU Member States, Sector Members, Associates, ITU Academia, and to any individual from a country that is a member of the ITU and who wishes to contribute to the work. This includes individuals who are also members of international, regional and national organizations. Participation is free of charge.
