Juanjo Dañobeitia
Professor of Marine Geophysics CSIC

Juanjo Dañobeitia is Professor of Marine Geophysics at the CSIC, he joined mid-July 2024 the UNESCO-IOC as liaison with JTF Smart Cables. From 2017 till 2023, he was Director General of the European Research Infrastructure EMSO ERIC. dedicated to the promotion of multidisciplinary research in the deep ocean and water column, with particular emphasis on global change, marine biodiversity and geohazards around European seas. He has more than 40 years of experience in Marine Research and Technology, with more than 150 SCI publications. He was Deputy director of the Large-Scale Spanish Marine Infrastructure at the UTM-CSIC Barcelona (2000-2012), responsible for the Spanish Research Fleet and the Antarctic Station. He has worked at various European Research Institutions: University Complutense Madrid, ETH-Zürich, University of Utrecht, University of Cambridge, Polytechnic University of Barcelona and at the Marine Science and Earth Science Institutes of the CSIC in Barcelona. High Level Expert Group- ESFRI, EMSO, European Ocean Observing System (EOOS) operational Committee, since 2020, member of the Ocean Network Canada (ONC) 2022-2024, International Science Advisory Board from Alfred Wegener Institute POLAR Research.

Awards: “Orden Mérito Civil, 2015 “for his exceptional contribution to the State in Marine and Polar Sciences given by King Felipe VI.
