The Year of Impact 2024 report highlights the pivotal milestones, initiatives, and global impact of the ITU Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T) in advancing digital transformation, smart sustainable cities, virtual worlds, and Metaverse, while aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Message from the Director
In October, the governing conference for ITU standardization world, the World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly, set bold priorities for ITU standardization work on metaverse, artificial intelligence (AI), and digital public infrastructure. Our Citiverse initiative is unlocking new dimensions of urban sustainability through virtual worlds. Study Group 20 and focus groups on metaverse and AI and Internet of Things for digital agriculture delivered essential standards and guidelines for emerging technologies, while the United for Smart Sustainable Cities initiative continued to empower cities globally. We also held the first-ever UN Virtual Worlds Day, spotlighting the power of immersive technologies to tackle global challenges.
