Introduction
The Workshop on Satellites in IP & Multimedia was organized by
ITU-T
Study Group 12,
Study Group 13,
Study Group 16,
ITU-R Study Group 4,
Study Group 8
and ICG-SAT (Inter-Sector Coordination Group on Satellite
Matters).
Objectives
This Workshop examined the business case for satellite services, network management issues
and multimedia delivery mechanisms. There were sessions examining the role of satellite
communications in developing regions, and discussion on next generation satellite based IP and
multimedia services. It was comprised of six sessions, thematic round-tables, and a conclusion session,
with the aim to:
- Increase awareness of ITU-T and ITU-R related studies
- Provide future standardization perspective for satellites over IP & Multimedia, including coordination with other Standards Development Organizations
- Elaborate possible contribution to World Summit on Information Society from the Satellite view point
- Enhance studies on the possibility of use of satellites for bridging digital divide
The Workshop opened at 09:30 hours on the first day. The discussions were held in English only. Detailed information concerning the meeting rooms
were displayed on the screens at the entrances to ITU headquarters and CICG building.
