At the kind invitation of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC), Japan, ITU organized a Workshop on Digital Signage from 13 to 14 December 2011 at the Akiba Hall,
(5th Floor of Akiba Plaza), Tokyo, Japan.
Background
Digital signage service has come into widespread use worldwide by placing large-size display terminals at stations, airports, shopping centres and office complexes. A recent trend points to a wide use of small-size display terminals and digital photo frames for digital signage at retail shops, supermarkets, etc. The system architecture of the service has moved from the stand-alone type to the network type with various, heterogeneous digital signage display terminals connected to a broadband network.
Standardization is fundamental to reduce the cost of equipment and ensure interoperability. For example, appropriate signage distribution mechanisms and strategies may be needed for cost-effective signage usage by advertisers and shop owners. In response to this, studies towards the standardization of digital signage services started in March 2011 within ITU-T Study Group 16.
Objectives
This workshop shared ideas and provided insight on advanced digital signage service features and requirements, current best practices and existing standardization activities of key players. The workshop also shared digital signage service use cases and common challenges to the widespread deployment of the digital signage service as a new service over broadband networks.
