Abstract
Architectures review for interoperability in e-health
Interoperability plays a key role for the provision of e-health services in an integrated way and has to
be in mind from initial stages. Therefore, the issue of interoperability stands out as one that has the
potential to positively impact many of the industry�s current technical needs in a significant way.
According to the definition of architecture from IEEE 1471-2000: � The fundamental organization of a system
embodied in its components, their relationships to each other, and to the environment, and the principles
guiding its design and evolution�, it is commonly agreed that a good architectural description in the e-health
field may be the tool to guarantee interoperability and quality of service since the inception stage of the system.
Some already existing standards or initiatives to standardise enterprise architectures (specially the part
dealing with software architecture) applicable to the e-health field shall be reviewed: IEEE 1471-2000, TOGAF
and Telemedicine System Interoperability Architecture.
Special attention shall be also paid to the issues where standards are needed in e-health / Telemedicine from a
practical point of view, considering existing formal and de facto standards.
