Future Internet Impacts on the Evolution of Next Generation Network Infrastructures and Services

Outline
The notion of the future internet (FI) is increasing these days, as this
buzzword reflects the evolution of the internet in different domains, including
the internet of services, the internet of things, and the network of the future.
Nevertheless, these domains contribute to one major vision, which represents a
totally connected planet, in which humans and machines are seamlessly
interconnected and new applications, such as smart city applications, become a
reality for a better living.
This half-day tutorial will give an introduction and brief overview about the
ongoing global research activities related to the future internet and look on
the impacts of the related technology trends on the evolution of next generation
networks (NGNs). In this regard the tutorial provides an overview of the current
NGN infrastructure and service standards, such as the IP Multimedia Subsystem
(IMS) and Service Delivery Platform (SDP) providing the related service enabling
infrastructure.
In the course of the tutorial also the impact of emerging mobile broadband
networks will be addressed, which play a major role in the context of
fixed-mobile convergence and seamless service access in the light of increasing
cloud-based service offers. In this context the Evolved Packet System (EPS) and
the related Evolved Packet Core (EPC) will be introduced and their interplay
with the other aforementioned platforms illustrated.
The tutorial ends with an outline of the
FOKUS Future Seamless Communications
Playground, which represents an extensible NGN and FI technology and services testbed, based on the globally recognized Fraunhofer FOKUS OpenIMS and OpenEPC
toolkits. Innovative Smart City applications will be used to illustrate the
capabilities of the testbed and related toolkits which can be used to setup own
testbeds around the globe.
A final Q&A Session will conclude the tutorial.

Biography
Thomas Magedanz (PhD) is full professor in the electrical engineering and
computer sciences faculty at the Technische Universit�t Berlin, Germany, leading
the chair for next generation networks since 2003. In addition, he is director
of the next generation network infrastructure competence center of the Fraunhofer Institute FOKUS.
Since more than 20 years Prof. Magedanz is working in the convergence field of
fixed and mobile telecommunications, the internet and information technologies,
which resulted in many international R&D projects centered around the
implementation of advanced Service Delivery Platforms for Next Generation
Networks and the future internet. In the course of his research activities he
published more than 200 technical papers/articles. In addition, Prof. Magedanz
is senior member of the IEEE, and editorial board member of several journals.
Thomas Magedanz got his diploma and his PhD at the computer sciences department
of the Technical University of Berlin, Germany in November 1988 and August 1993
respectively, where he was working on distributed multimedia systems,
Intelligent Networks and telecommunications management. In 2000, he obtained his
"Habilitation" for Computer Sciences at the same university performing research
in the field of innovative middleware technologies and Open Service
Architectures. During these years he was associate researcher and assistant
professor at TU Berlin, performing big research projects for German network
operators and vendors on the use of distributed object and mobile agent
technologies for advanced telecommunications service platforms on top of fixed
and mobile broadband networks. In addition he was also technical leader of
several EU RACE, ACTS and IST projects.
Since 2003 Prof. Magedanz is performing research on middleware and distributed
service platforms for converging networks, fixed and mobile next generation
networks and the future internet, leading to the development of service oriented
technology test beds and related open source tools. The most popular ones
include the Open Source IMS Core and the
Open IMS Playground established in
2004. In 2007 he opened the new
Open SOA Telco Playground for IMS/Web2.0/SOA
service prototyping on top of NGNs and legacy circuit switched telecom networks.
In spring 2010 he opened the
Future Seamless Communication Playground based on
the new developed FOKUS Open Evolved Packet Core software toolkit in order to
enable applied research on IP core network evolution and seamless mobility
support in fixed and mobile NGN environments.
In 2007 Prof. Magedanz joined the European FIRE (Future Internet Research
Experimental Facilities) Expert Group actively promoting the federation of
future internet research testbeds. In this context he is also active in several
FIRE projects and the new FI Private Public Partnership (PPP) projects as well
as the German G-Lab project, developing and extending the
Teagle Toolkit.
Since 2006, Prof. Magedanz is also acting as Extraordinary Professor for Next
Generation Networks and Services at the
Department of Electrical Engineering of
the University of Cape Town, South Africa. From 2007 – 2009, he was also
Visiting Professor to the Department of Mathematics, Physics and Computing at
the Waterford Institute of Technology in Ireland.
