In support of “International Year for Sustainable Energy for All” ITU together with Telef�nica announced two challenges to uncover innovative ICT approaches towards achieving this goal.

First the Green ICT Hackathon, 28-29 February 2012, was held during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Secondly the 2nd Green ICT Application Challenge opened a window between 1 February 2012 to 31 May 2012 for the submission of Concept Papers.

The application “SocialElectricity” has been awarded the winner of the second ITU Green ICT Application Challenge. Designed by Andreas Kamilaris, from Cyprus, “SocialElectricity” is a Facebook application that allows people to compare their electricity footprint with their friends and also their neighborhood/village/town in a country-wide scale. The application aims to help people become aware of their electricity consumption and manage it more rationally.

The winner of the competition – Andreas Kamilaris – presented his application on 19 September 2012 in Paris (France) during the 2nd ITU Green Standards Week.

Standby Monitor for Home Appliances

This application proposes a simple solution to reduce the power wastage in home appliances. A low cost affordable device, which can be installed by the home users themselves, sends wireless signal to a monitor displaying at any time appliances that are left in power-on mode and idling. Alerted by the monitor, the users have an idea of the devices to be switched off.

ELECTROSOFT - An Application of Software Technology for Electric Power Supply Scheduling

The objective of this application is to schedule the power supply of the electronic devices accurately, thus minimizing the electricity consumption, nationally and globally. Such an application can save electricity by scheduling the power supply of devices and providing global control by cell phone DTMF to turn on or off power supply any time from any location of this earth and minimizing the human mistakes.

A Energy Proportional Power Supply Control for Rural ICT Systems
Tohru Asami (Japan)

This application proposes the development of an integrated management technology for renewable energy to run ICT systems in rural areas using the surplus power of the photovoltaic power generation unit designed for a cellular-phone base station. This proposal aims at providing rural areas with ICT systems in an energy-efficient way improving local people's quality of life.

SURE!
Andy B�cker (Spain)

SURE! is a transparent, interactive, voluntary and fun certification system to help guide the way to become more sustainable. Applicable not only to companies but also to individuals (sustainable lifestyle), products, organizations, cities, and more, SURE! is a real-time scoring system to help spread local/international recognition for the efforts put in toward being sustainable.

A Jury of high-level experts selected and awarded the best and most innovative Concept Paper.

The author of the best and most innovative Concept Paper for a “Sustainable Energy for All” ICT application has been awarded the cash prize of USD 3,000 in Paris, France, on 19 September 2012 during the 2nd ITU Green Standards Week.

ITU would like to thank all developers for their interest and participation in the second ITU Green ICT Application Challenge. Overall 42 applications were received covering topic such as energy efficiency, access to energy and renewable energy. Four special mentions were made by the jury.

Telef�nica and ITU, hosted a Hackathon in Barcelona, Spain, on 28-29 February 2012 during the GSMA Mobile World Congress.

The Hackathon is a marathon where developers create applications within a defined timeframe.

Developers coming from all over the world gathered and competed to propose and develop a “Sustainable Energy for All” ICT application.

The development of green ICT applications will help to promote technology transfer worldwide.
