Summary: JPEG AI targets a wide range of applications such as cloud storage, visual surveillance, autonomous vehicles and devices, image collection storage and management, live monitoring of visual data and media distribution. The objective is to design a coding solution that offers significant compression efficiency improvement over coding standards in common use at equivalent subjective quality and an effective compressed-domain processing for machine learning based image processing and computer vision tasks. Other key requirements include hardware/software implementation-friendly encoding and decoding, support for 8- and 10-bit depth, efficient coding of images with text and graphics and progressive decoding. T.JPEG-AI-RS corresponds to ISO/IEC 6048-3 and is to specify reference software for the ITU-T T.JPEG-AI core coding specification. It will have an electronic attachment containing software source code for use as an example implementation of encoding and decoding functionality for the T.JPEG-AI core coding specification. The use of the reference software will not be a requirement for conformance to the core coding specification, as the syntax and decoding process for the image coding format will be fully documented by the core coding specification. Rather, the software will serve as an example implementation that can be used for experimentation and for comparison with the results of other implementations for conformance testing purposes. It is also intended that the reference software source code can be used as the starting basis for implementations of encoders and decoders based on the core coding specification (although such usage is optional).
