The world community expects to adopt an achievable balanced outcome in Cancun which may not be exhaustive in its details, but should be comprehensive in its scope .
This High-Level Segment will aim to set transparent policy objectives and targets to measure and improve government green ICT strategies, including ICT-enabled applications across the economy.
This High-Level Segment will provide panelists with an opportunity to exchange views on how ICTs might help in the implementation of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Kyoto Protocol.

Session 1: Towards Green ICT strategies : Government
Paving the Way
Governments across the world have introduced a range of programs and initiatives on ICT and the environment to address environmental challenges, particularly global warming and energy use.
But, it is still too premature to claim that all countries, especially in the developing part of the world, have reached a clear level of understanding of the threats as well as how to address these threats using ICTs., In order to raise awareness, this session will shed light on :
National and regional policies and best practices on how ICTs can help to address climate change with a special focus on key policy issues in Africa and the need to expand ICTs.
ICT Regulatory frameworks
The impact of e-Government on Climate Change

Ms Helen Asiamah, Deputy Director, Environmental Protection Agency, Ghana [ BIOGRAPHY | PRESENTATION ]
Session 2: Can the ICT Sector
Save the Planet and Humanity?
Global, regional and national policies play a key role in efforts to combat climate change. At the national and regional level, ICT regulators, producers and telecommunication operators increasingly need to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and energy consumption.
Information and communication technologies (ICTs) can improve environmental performance and address climate change across the economy. The biggest gains for smarter environmental and economic strategies and applications are in power generation and distribution, buildings and transportation – three areas which contribute to the bulk of greenhouse gases. Further environmental benefits of ICT applications are evident in areas such as water management, biodiversity protection, pollution reduction.
This session will provide, inter alia,
an overview of:
Role of ICTs in renewable energy (solar, power, wind, desertification and water)
Role of ICTs in monitoring, predicting, detecting natural hazards, alerting, and responding to disasters.
How telecom operators can begin to adopt renewable energy solutions to go beyond energy efficiency and power the network with green energy.
Key issues/barriers and solutions to the deployment of innovative ICT-solutions.
How to use ICT to improve the smart meters and the smart grids in power systems, including success stories and best practices.
IT applications in smart buildings and smart motor systems.

Session 3: How Can the Telecoms Industry Lead the Drive to a Greener Society?
It is estimated that ICTs can play a significant role in other sectors to limit and reduce GHG emissions, e.g. by promoting video conferences instead of travelling, replacing paper for bits, smart buildings and better supply chain management.
This session will provide an overview on the ICT companies’ different solutions, best practices, initiatives to demonstrate corporate social responsibility, fighting against climate change, and enabling eco-friendly enterprise.

Session 4: Sustainable
Management of ICT Resources: ICTs from
Cradle to E-waste.
As the deployment of ICTs continues the amount of waste from the sector increases. The ICT sector faces the challenge to manage e-waste, e.g. the disposal of mobile phones. Planning and action in areas such as collection system, e-disposal, life-cycle analysis, and recycling is needed.
This session will provide an overview of:
Eco-friendly technology materials.
Technologies and life-cycle analysis for ICT goods and services.
Sustainable development and e-waste management.
Best practices and success stories in e-waste sustainable management.

Session 6: Adaptation and
Climate Change Impact
Adaptation refers to measures to address changes already occurring as a result of global warming. These changes have a negative impact on ecosystems and on human habitat affecting access to natural resources such as drinking water and farming. As agriculture is likely to suffer the biggest impacts, sound adaptation processes are required to sustain agricultural production and food system as a whole.
IPCC, the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change, stressed the ability of decision-makers to manage information as an important factor determining the chance for a community to adapt to climate change.
ICTs have great potential and use in collecting, analyzing, planning and disseminating information on climate change and this is one of the reasons why the Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) can play an important role in tackling climate change.
This session will look at how ICTs can help in adapting to the new environmental challenges, especially in developing countries. It will also look at national climate change adaptation planning, early warning systems, prevention, risk reduction issues, and technological issues such as the use of remote sensing.
