(Merged into revised Question 13/12. Deleted on 18 February 2011. See TSB Circ.169 and
186). Motivation
With the fast growth of IP networks, packet based gateways are being rapidly
deployed; these IP based devices include but are not limited to:
- IP to IP Gateways,
- IP to PSTN Gateways,
- Home Gateways,
- Mobile Gateways.
Due to the unique characteristics of the IP networks including packet loss,
delay variation, etc. new performance specifications, as well as appropriate
measuring methods, will have to be developed.
From the perspective of the end user it is essential that the impact of such
gateways not have a significant effect on performance; different media and/or
their combination will require different performance considerations.
The following major Recommendation, in force at the time of approval of this
Question, falls under its responsibility:
Recommendation P.1010.
Question
Study items to be considered include, but are not limited to:
- Which transmission objectives need to be defined for IP
gateways?
- What guidance can be provided for different media and/or
their combination in IP gateways?
- How can an IP "half channel" adaptor, which may also be
referred to as "reference codec" be defined?
- How do IP measurement methodologies apply to IP gateways?
- Which reference connections can be defined the different
kinds of gateways in combination with different media?
- Considerations on how to help measure and mitigate climate
change.
Tasks
Tasks include, but are not limited to:
- Development of one or more new Recommendations on Requirements for
different types of gateways in combination with different media,
- Production of a new Recommendation P.VOIP-MM on Measurement
Methodologies for Gateways,
- Contribution to possible extensions or enhancements of Recommendations
P.501 and P.502.
